Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) Information for Patients in Ireland
Mounjaro side effects: what to expect
Like all prescription medicines, Mounjaro (tirzepatide) can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Most are mild to moderate, affect the digestive system, and are most noticeable when you start treatment or move up to a higher dose. They usually ease within a few weeks as your body adjusts.
Very common side effects (may affect more than 1 in 10 people)
Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and constipation are the most frequently reported side effects. They tend to appear in the first weeks after starting or increasing a dose and settle over time. Eating smaller meals, avoiding rich or fatty food, and staying well hydrated can help while your body adapts.
Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)
These include reduced appetite, indigestion, stomach pain, bloating, burping, wind, acid reflux, dizziness, low blood pressure, tiredness, hair loss and reactions around the injection site such as redness or itching. Low blood sugar can occur, mainly in people also taking certain diabetes medicines, note that we do not prescribe Mounjaro to people with diabetes.
Uncommon but serious side effects
A small number of people experience gallstones or inflammation of the gallbladder, and rarely inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis). Seek medical help without delay if you develop severe, persistent pain in your stomach or back, with or without vomiting. Severe allergic reactions are rare; call emergency services if you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing.
Managing side effects during titration
Your dose is increased gradually every four weeks precisely to keep side effects manageable. If side effects are troubling you, do not stop treatment on your own, contact your prescriber, who may hold your current dose for longer before stepping up. Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration, so keep fluids up and seek advice if you cannot keep fluids down.
When to contact a doctor
Contact your prescriber or GP if any side effect worries you, does not settle, or gets worse. This page is a summary, not a complete list, always read the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.
This information is for general educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice. Mounjaro is prescribed solely where an Irish-registered doctor determines it is clinically appropriate following an individual assessment. Always read the patient information leaflet and follow your prescriber’s guidance. You can report suspected side effects directly to the HPRA at www.hpra.ie.

WHAT IS MOUNJARO (GIP & GLP-1 WEIGHT LOSS PEN)?
Mounjaro is a prescription weight loss medication that may help overweight and obese adults lose weight if they have a BMI of 30 or higher or 27 and above with a weight-related health condition. It's a once-weekly injection you can administer yourself. Like other weight loss injections, it works by reducing your appetite, helping you feel fuller for longer.
IS MOUNJARO THE SAME AS OZEMPIC?
No, Mounjaro and Ozempic are different medications, though they work in a similar way. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide and acts as both a GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist, while Ozempic (also sold as Wegovy) contains semaglutide and is just a GLP-1. However, both help lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes and support weight loss.
ARE THERE DIFFERENT DOSES OF MOUNJARO?
The GIP & GLP-1 pen is available in six different doses. You'll begin with the lowest dose, which your prescriber will gradually increase through a process called titration. Doses are adjusted every four weeks, allowing your body to adapt. This gradual approach helps maximise effectiveness while reducing the risk of unwanted side effects.
IS TIRZEPATIDE (MOUNJARO) LEGAL IN IRELAND?
Yes. Tirzepatide is a prescription-only medicine authorised in the European Union for adults who meet specific medical criteria. In Ireland, it may be prescribed by an Irish-registered doctor following consultation. Dispensing occurs only through licensed pharmacies that source medicine from approved wholesalers. It cannot legally be sold or supplied by unregistered websites or non-medical retailers.
HOW DO I GET A PRESCRIPTION FOR TIRZEPATIDE IN IRELAND?
You must first complete a medical assessment reviewed by an Irish-registered GP. If the doctor determines that treatment with tirzepatide is clinically appropriate, a prescription is issued electronically to a licensed pharmacy. This ensures full compliance with HPRA, IMC, and GPhC regulations.
WILL MY LOCAL GP PRESCRIBE TIRZEPATIDE?
Some GPs in Ireland may not yet prescribe this class of medication, as it is relatively new and requires ongoing monitoring. At WeightLossInjections.ie, prescriptions are reviewed by Irish-registered doctors experienced in weight-management care. Your GP will always remain part of your overall healthcare team and can be informed of any prescription for continuity of care.
HOW CAN I QUALIFY FOR TIRZEPATIDE?
Doctors usually consider tirzepatide for adults who have a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or higher, or have a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or higher with another weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, insulin resistance, or sleep apnoea. A full medical review is required to confirm suitability, taking into account your current health, medications, and treatment history.
WHO CANNOT TAKE TIRZEPATIDE?
Tirzepatide is not suitable for everyone. It should generally be avoided if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of: Severe gastrointestinal disease, Pancreatitis, Certain endocrine or thyroid conditions. Your doctor will evaluate these factors carefully before prescribing.
CAN I TAKE TIRZEPATIDE IF I'M NOT DIABETIC?
Yes. While tirzepatide was first developed for type 2 diabetes, it is also authorised for medical weight management in adults without diabetes who meet the BMI criteria. A qualified doctor must confirm that treatment is appropriate for your specific health profile.
WHERE CAN I OBTAIN TIRZEPATIDE (MOUNJARO) IN IRELAND?
Tirzepatide can only be dispensed through a licensed pharmacy following a valid prescription from an Irish-registered doctor. WeightLossInjections.ie can send your prescription directly to a pharmacy in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland, ensuring that every supply is traceable, authentic, and handled under regulated conditions. You should never buy this medicine from unverified online sources or social-media sellers.
IS THE PROCESS SAFE AND REGULATED?
Yes. Every stage, from consultation to pharmacy delivery, follows Irish and UK healthcare standards. Prescriptions are encrypted and transferred securely, and all pharmacies operate under GPhC or PSI oversight. This ensures patient safety, medicine authenticity, and compliance with HPRA advertising regulations (S.I. No. 541 of 2007).
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON SIDE EFFECTS?
Mild, short-term effects such as nausea, bloating, or constipation can occur during the first few weeks of treatment. These typically ease as the body adjusts. Your doctor will advise on dosage titration and how to manage any side effects safely.
CAN I STOP TAKING TIRZEPATIDE SUDDENLY?
You should always discuss changes with your doctor first. Stopping suddenly can cause appetite and weight to rebound. Most patients taper their dose gradually under medical supervision.
HOW LONG DOES TREATMENT USUALLY LAST?
Many patients continue tirzepatide for six to twelve months, depending on goals, response, and medical advice. Ongoing review ensures the medicine remains safe and effective for your needs.
CAN I TAKE IT WHILE PREGNANT OR BREASTFEEDING?
This medicine should not be used during pregnancy as the effects on an unborn baby are unknown. If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, talk to your healthcare provider before using this medicine. Contraception is recommended when you are using this medicine. If you are breastfeeding, you must talk to your healthcare provider before using it. It's unknown whether tirzepatide passes into breast milk.
WHAT IF I'VE INJECTED TOO MUCH?
Taking more than your prescribed dose won't make it more effective and can cause serious side effects. If you've accidentally injected too much, seek medical help immediately. Overdose symptoms may include severe nausea, vomiting and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
STORING YOUR MOUNJARO PEN
You must keep your medicine out of sight and reach of children. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the pen label and on the carton after 'EXP'. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. Store in a refrigerator between 2 degrees C and 8 degrees C. Do not freeze the pen. Store it in the original packaging to protect it from light. Your GIP & GLP-1 pen can be stored unrefrigerated below 30 degrees C for up to 21 days, and then the pen must be discarded.
