Wegovy Pill in Ireland: When Will It Be Available? (July 2026 Update)

Last updated: 6 July 2026

The short answer, as of July 2026: the Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide 25 mg) is not yet stocked in Irish pharmacies, but it is now EU-approved. On 22 May 2026 the EMA's medicines committee (CHMP) recommended approval, and the European Commission granted marketing authorisation on 15 July 2026, making it the first oral GLP-1 approved for weight management in Europe. Irish pharmacy availability now depends on market launch, stocking and supply, realistically late 2026 to 2027.

Injectable Wegovy remains the licensed, available option in Ireland today.

What is the Wegovy pill?

The Wegovy pill is a once-daily 25 mg oral tablet of semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the weekly Wegovy injection, made by Novo Nordisk. It is not the same as Rybelsus, the existing oral semaglutide licensed in Ireland only for type 2 diabetes at doses up to 14 mg. The Wegovy pill's 25 mg maintenance dose was developed specifically for weight management.

In the OASIS 4 Phase 3 trial, adults taking the 25 mg tablet lost an average of 13.6% of body weight at 64 weeks (versus 2.2% on placebo). Among those who took it as directed, average loss reached 16.6%, and roughly one in three participants lost 20% or more, results comparable to the Wegovy injection.

Notably, the CHMP opinion includes SELECT trial data in the label, evidence that semaglutide reduces the risk of major cardiovascular events, which strengthens the clinical case prescribers can make.

The Irish manufacturing connection: Novo Nordisk is investing €432 million in its Athlone facility to manufacture the Wegovy pill for markets outside the US, with capacity coming online from end 2027 through 2028. Early European supply will come from existing plants, which is why initial Irish stock may be constrained.

The four doses: how the pill will be taken

The Wegovy pill uses a four-step titration, moving up every 30 days as tolerated:

StepDoseDurationPurpose
11.5 mg dailyWeeks 1 to 4Tolerability, not a weight-loss dose
24 mg dailyWeeks 5 to 8Gradual escalation
39 mg dailyWeeks 9 to 12Near-therapeutic
425 mg dailyWeek 13 onwardsFull maintenance dose

The tablet must be taken on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, with no more than 120 ml of plain water, swallowed whole, followed by a 30-minute wait before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other oral medicines. Breaking these rules can cut absorption by up to 40%, a meaningful daily commitment compared with a once-weekly injection.

Should you wait for the pill?

If you're clinically eligible for treatment now, most doctors would say no. Obesity carries ongoing cardiovascular and metabolic risk, and an equally effective licensed treatment, the weekly injection, is available in Ireland today. Waiting 6 to 18 months for a tablet that delivers similar results, with stricter daily dosing rules, rarely makes medical sense. If needle anxiety is the barrier, it's worth knowing the needle is extremely fine and most patients report injections become routine within weeks.

A warning: the HPRA has repeatedly warned about illegal online sellers. Anyone claiming to sell "Wegovy tablets" in Ireland today is selling an unlicensed or counterfeit product. Legitimate GLP-1 medicines require a prescription from an Irish-registered doctor, dispensed by a licensed pharmacy.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Wegovy pill available in Ireland yet?

Not in pharmacies yet. The European Commission approved oral Wegovy (semaglutide 25 mg) for the EU on 15 July 2026, following the CHMP recommendation of 22 May 2026. Irish availability now depends on market launch and supply, expected late 2026 to 2027.

When exactly will it arrive in Irish pharmacies?

Realistically late 2026 to 2027. EU approval was granted on 15 July 2026; next come Irish market launch, pharmacy stocking and supply allocation. Full-scale supply from the Athlone plant arrives 2027 to 2028.

How many doses does the Wegovy pill come in?

Four: 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg, taken once daily, stepping up every 30 days to the 25 mg maintenance dose.

Is the pill as effective as the injection?

Trial results are comparable: 13.6 to 16.6% average weight loss for the pill (OASIS 4) versus roughly 15% for the injection (STEP), though the pill requires strict fasting rules for full absorption.

How is it different from Rybelsus?

Rybelsus is oral semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes at up to 14 mg. The Wegovy pill is 25 mg and developed specifically for weight management.

Will the HSE cover it?

Unknown. A reimbursement decision follows the EU approval granted in July 2026, via NCPE assessment. Private prescriptions are expected to come first.

Every prescription decision is made by an Irish-registered doctor following individual medical assessment.
