The world of medical weight management has expanded quickly, and the names can be genuinely confusing. Wegovy, Rybelsus, Mounjaro, Ozempic, oral semaglutide, tirzepatide, pills and injections, different brands, overlapping ingredients. If you’ve found yourself unsure which is which, you’re not alone. This guide cuts through the confusion and compares the main options available in Ireland, so you can understand how they differ. It is provided for general educational purposes only and is not medical advice.
First, the key ingredients
Almost all of these treatments belong to a family of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which reduce appetite and help you feel full. The crucial thing to understand is that several brand names can share the same active ingredient, and one brand can come as either a pill or an injection.
- Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Wegovy (the injection and the new pill), in Ozempic (a diabetes injection) and in Rybelsus (a diabetes tablet).
- Tirzepatide is a newer, dual-acting ingredient and is the medicine in Mounjaro.
With that map in hand, the comparison becomes much clearer.
The Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide 25 mg)
The newest arrival, the Wegovy pill, is a once-daily tablet containing high-dose semaglutide developed specifically for weight management. In the OASIS 4 trial it produced average weight loss of around 16.6% of body weight when taken consistently alongside lifestyle support, comparable to the high-dose Wegovy injection. It’s taken each morning on an empty stomach with a small sip of water, with a 30-minute wait before food or other medicines.
Its big appeal is offering injection-level results in a needle-free, daily-tablet format. It was approved by the UK’s MHRA in June 2026 and is accessible to patients in Ireland through our Northern Ireland dispensing route where a doctor determines it is clinically appropriate.
Rybelsus (oral semaglutide, lower dose)
This is the one that causes the most confusion, because Rybelsus is also an oral semaglutide tablet. The difference is purpose and strength. Rybelsus is licensed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, at lower doses (up to 14 mg), and is taken with the same empty-stomach morning routine as the Wegovy pill.
Because it contains semaglutide, Rybelsus can have a weight-reducing effect, but it was developed and approved for blood-sugar control rather than weight management, and at a lower dose than the 25 mg Wegovy pill. In short: same ingredient family, different dose, different licensed purpose.
The Wegovy injection (semaglutide 2.4 mg)
The established weight-management option, Wegovy injection, is a once-weekly injection of semaglutide that has helped many people in Ireland. In clinical use it has shown average weight loss in the region of 15%. For people who don’t mind a weekly injection, it remains a proven, well-understood choice, and it’s the benchmark the new pill is measured against.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide)
Mounjaro is different because it uses a different active ingredient, tirzepatide, which acts on two gut-hormone pathways (GIP and GLP-1) rather than one. It’s given as a once-weekly injection. In clinical studies, tirzepatide has produced very strong weight-loss results, up to around 22% of body weight in some studies, making it one of the most talked-about options. There is no tablet form of Mounjaro.

Which one is right for you?
There’s no universal “best” treatment, the right choice depends on your health, goals, tolerance and lifestyle. A few general points to discuss with a prescriber:
- If you want a tablet rather than a needle, the Wegovy pill is the option designed for weight management.
- If you’re comfortable with a weekly injection, both the Wegovy injection and Mounjaro are proven options, and a doctor can advise which suits your profile.
- If your primary concern is type 2 diabetes, Rybelsus and other diabetes-licensed medicines may be more relevant, a conversation for your doctor.
The single most important factor is having a qualified doctor assess your individual situation. Through WeightLossInjections.ie, an Irish-registered doctor can weigh up your medical history, what you’ve tried before, your preferences and your goals, and, where treatment is clinically appropriate, recommend the option most likely to suit you. Not all patients are suitable, and a prescription is not guaranteed.
How to get started
Complete a short online form, there’s no video or phone call, and select your preferred treatment. An Irish-registered doctor reviews your suitability, and if a prescription is issued (a flat €30 fee) it’s sent to your chosen pharmacy in Northern Ireland for dispensing, with collection or delivery available. If treatment isn’t suitable, your €30 fee is refunded.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Wegovy pill the same as Rybelsus?
Both are oral semaglutide tablets and share the same active ingredient, which is why they cause so much confusion. The difference is dose and purpose. Rybelsus is a lower-dose tablet (up to 14 mg) licensed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, whereas the Wegovy pill is a higher-dose formulation (up to 25 mg) developed specifically for weight management. Because Rybelsus contains semaglutide it can have some effect on weight, but it was approved for blood-sugar control rather than weight loss, and at a lower strength. They’re also taken the same way, once daily on an empty stomach with the 30-minute wait.
Is Mounjaro a pill or an injection?
Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection, not a tablet. It contains a different active ingredient, tirzepatide, which acts on two gut-hormone pathways (GIP and GLP-1) rather than the single pathway that semaglutide targets. There is currently no oral (pill) form of Mounjaro available, so if you specifically want a tablet, the Wegovy pill is the weight-management option, not Mounjaro.
Which is more effective, the Wegovy pill or Mounjaro?
Both have produced strong results in clinical trials. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) has shown higher average weight loss in studies, up to around 22% of body weight, compared with around 16.6% for the 25 mg Wegovy pill. However, “more effective on average” doesn’t always mean “better for you”: the right choice depends on your medical history, how you tolerate the medicine, whether you prefer a tablet or an injection, and your goals. A prescriber weighs all of this up as part of your assessment.
What’s the difference between Wegovy, Ozempic, Rybelsus and Mounjaro?
Wegovy, Ozempic and Rybelsus all contain semaglutide; Mounjaro contains tirzepatide. Wegovy (injection and pill) is for weight management; Ozempic (injection) and Rybelsus (tablet) are licensed for type 2 diabetes; and Mounjaro (injection) is used for weight management and diabetes. The simplest way to keep them straight is to separate the active ingredient from the brand name and the format, several brands can share one ingredient, and one brand can come as either a pill or an injection.
Can I switch between these treatments?
Sometimes, where clinically appropriate, for example, moving from an injection to the Wegovy pill, or adjusting treatment if one doesn’t suit you. Switching is always a clinical decision made and supervised by your prescriber, never something to do on your own. Your follow-up reviews are exactly where these adjustments are considered.
