Mounjaro Ireland: the key information

What is Mounjaro (GIP & GLP-1 weight loss pen)?

Mounjaro is a prescription weight loss medication that may help overweight and obese adults lose weight if they have a BMI of 30 or higher or 27 and above with a weight-related health condition. It’s a once-weekly injection you can administer yourself. Like other weight loss injections, it works by reducing your appetite, helping you feel fuller for longer.

No, Mounjaro and Ozempic are different medications, though they work in a similar way. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide and acts as both a GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist, while Ozempic (also sold as Wegovy) contains semaglutide and is just a GLP-1. However, both help lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes and support weight loss.

The GIP & GLP-1 pen is available in six different doses. You’ll begin with the lowest dose, which your prescriber will gradually increase through a process called titration. Doses are adjusted every four weeks, allowing your body to adapt. This gradual approach helps maximise effectiveness while reducing the risk of unwanted side effects.

Yes. Tirzepatide is a prescription-only medicine authorised in the European Union for adults who meet specific medical criteria.
In Ireland, it may be prescribed by an Irish-registered doctor following consultation. Dispensing occurs only through licensed pharmacies that source medicine from approved wholesalers. It cannot legally be sold or supplied by unregistered websites or non-medical retailers.

You must first complete a medical assessment reviewed by an Irish-registered GP. If the doctor determines that treatment with tirzepatide is clinically appropriate, a prescription is issued electronically to a licensed pharmacy. This ensures full compliance with HPRA, IMC, and GPhC regulations.

Some GPs in Ireland may not yet prescribe this class of medication, as it is relatively new and requires ongoing monitoring.
At WeightLossInjections.ie, prescriptions are reviewed by Irish-registered doctors experienced in weight-management care.
Your GP will always remain part of your overall healthcare team and can be informed of any prescription for continuity of care.

Doctors usually consider tirzepatide for adults who:

  • Have a BMI of 30 kg/m² or higher, or
  • Have a BMI of 27 kg/m² or higher with another weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, insulin resistance, or sleep apnoea.

A full medical review is required to confirm suitability, taking into account your current health, medications, and treatment history.

Tirzepatide is not suitable for everyone.
It should generally be avoided if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of:

  • Severe gastrointestinal disease
  • Pancreatitis
  • Certain endocrine or thyroid conditions

Your doctor will evaluate these factors carefully before prescribing.

Yes. While tirzepatide was first developed for type 2 diabetes, it is also authorised for medical weight management in adults without diabetes who meet the BMI criteria. A qualified doctor must confirm that treatment is appropriate for your specific health profile.

Tirzepatide can only be dispensed through a licensed pharmacy following a valid prescription from an Irish-registered doctor. WeightLossInjections.ie can send your prescription directly to a pharmacy in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland, ensuring that every supply is traceable, authentic, and handled under regulated conditions. You should never buy this medicine from unverified online sources or social-media sellers.

Yes. Every stage, from consultation to pharmacy delivery, follows Irish and UK healthcare standards. Prescriptions are encrypted and transferred securely, and all pharmacies operate under GPhC or PSI oversight. This ensures patient safety, medicine authenticity, and compliance with HPRA advertising regulations (S.I. No. 541 of 2007).

Mild, short-term effects such as nausea, bloating, or constipation can occur during the first few weeks of treatment.
These typically ease as the body adjusts. Your doctor will advise on dosage titration and how to manage any side effects safely.

You should always discuss changes with your doctor first. Stopping suddenly can cause appetite and weight to rebound. Most patients taper their dose gradually under medical supervision.

Many patients continue tirzepatide for six to twelve months, depending on goals, response, and medical advice.
Ongoing review ensures the medicine remains safe and effective for your needs.

This medicine should not be used during pregnancy as the effects on an unborn baby are unknown. If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, talk to your healthcare provider before using this medicine. Contraception is recommended when you are using this medicine. If you are breastfeeding, you must talk to your healthcare provider before using it. It’s unknown whether tirzepatide passes into breast milk.

Taking more than your prescribed dose won’t make it more effective and can cause serious side effects. If you’ve accidentally injected too much, seek medical help immediately. Overdose symptoms may include severe nausea, vomiting and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

You must keep your medicine out of sight and reach of children. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the pen label and on the carton after ‘EXP’. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. Store in a refrigerator between 2°C–8°C. Do not freeze the pen. Store it in the original packaging to protect it from light. Your GIP & GLP-1 pen can be stored unrefrigerated below 30°C for up to 21 days, and then the pen must be discarded.
